Due to errors in the printing of issue 9, the pattern for the Birkenstock socks was incorrect. The complete, correct pattern for these socks follows.

Materials

1,1000 gram ball of Opal sock wool. Alternatively, use 2 50 gram balls of 4 ply sock wool, such as Patonyle.
1 set of 4 2.75 mm double pointed needles
1 cable needle
2 stitch holders
Wool needle for darning in ends

Size – fits women's shoe size 6-8. Leg length and foot length can be made longer.

Tension – 16 sts and 20 sts to 5cm, measure over stocking st.

Special instruction – C4f, cable 4 front. Place 2 sts on cable needle and leave at front of work, knit next 2 sts and then knit the 2 sts from cable needle.

Socks – make 2
Using 4 ply sock yarn, cast on 66 sts, evenly over 3 needles, 22 sts on each needle.
Rnd 1 – K1, P2, *K4, P2, repeat from * to last 3 sts, K3.
Rnd 2 – As for round 1.
Rnd 3 – Cable round – K1, P2 (C4f, P2) 5 times, (K4, P2) 5 times, K3.
Rnds 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 – As for round 1.
Rnd 9 – As for round 3.
Repeat rounds 4-9 until there are a total of 11 cable twists. Length of leg can be varied at this point by adding additional repeats of round 4-9.
End last repeat with round 6.

Heel
Slip th first 34 sts onto first needle. Divide the rem sts between 2 needles. These will be used for the instep.
Heel is worked backwards and forwards in rows.
Row 1 – K1, P2, (K4, P2) 5 times, K1.
Row 2 – P1, K2, (P4, K2 ) 5 times, P1.
Row 3 – K1, P2 (C4f, P2) 5 times, K1.
Row 4 – P1, K2, (P4, K2 ) 5 times, P1.
Row 5 – K1, P2, (K4, P2) 5 times, K1.
Rows 6, 7, 8 – Repeat rows 4 and 5 and then row 4 once.
Row 9 – As row 3.
Row 10-27 – Repeat rows 4-9 three times.
Rows 28-29 – As for rows 4 and 5.
Row 30 – Purl.

Turn heel
Row 1 – K18, S11m K1, psso, K1, turn.
Row 2 – S11, P3, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 3 – S11, K4, S11, K1, psso, K1, turn.
Row 4 – S11, P5, P2tog, P1, turn.
Continue in this manner until all stitches have been worked onto one needle, 18 sts. Place instep stitches back onto one needle.

Shape instep
Knit first 9 sts of heel, pick up and knit 17 sts alongside of heel. Second needle – K3, P2, (K4, P2) 4 times, third needle – Pick up and knit 17 sts along other side of heel, knit remaining 9 sts.
Note – work in stocking stitch on needle 1 and 3 and rib pattern on needle 2 until toe shaping is reached.
First round – needle 1 – knit to last 4 sts, K2top, K2, needle 2 – rib pattern, third needle – K2, S11, K1, psso, knit to end.
Second round – Knit.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 16 sts rem on needle 1 and 3. Continue without further shaping until foot is 5cm shorter than length desired, measure from where stitches are picked up from side of heel.

Toe shaping
Note – for second sock, shapings need to be reversed otherwise you will end up with 2 left socks.

Diving round
Needle 1 – K8, slip the next 8 sts onto a stitch holder, cast on 3 sts. Needle 2 – slip first 8 sts onto a stitch holder, cast on 3 sts and leave on same stitch holder. Needle 3 – Knit, 54 sts.

Toe shaping
Round 1 – Needle 1 – knit, needle 2 knit to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2, third needle – K2, S11, K1, psso, knit to end.
Round 2 – Knit.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 42 sts remain.
Round 13 – Needle 1 – Knit to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2, needle 2 – K2, S11, K1, psso, knit to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2, needle 3 – K2, S11, K1, psso, knit to end.
Round 14 – Knit.
Repeat roundsd 1 and 2 until a total of 18 sts rem. Graft rem sts together.

Big toe – same for both socks
Place toe stitches on 3 needles as follows. Needle 1 knit 8 sts from first stitch holder. Needle 2 – knit 8 sts from second stitch holder. Needle 3 – pick up and knit 8 sts along the 6 cast on stitches between toes. (1 for each cast on st and an extra st at each end, 24 sts).
Work 12 rounds in stocking stitch.
Dec round - *K2tog *repeat from * to end, 12 sts.
Next round – Knit.
Repeat decrease round once more.
Break off yarn, thread through rem sts, pull up tightly and fasten off.

Dividing round for right sock
Needle 1 – knit
Needle 2 – K24, slip the next 8 sts onto a stitch holder, cast on 3 sts.
Needle 3 – slip first 8sts onto a stitch holder, cast on 3 sts (onto stitch holder) knit to end 54 sts.
Complete as for left sock.
